Longtime Gateway CHI member, Ryan Swarts, will present at the Kirkwood location of I Need That Art.
Practical Web Accessibility for Product Teams
Designing and building for accessibility has always been important, but unfortunately in a lot of cases it hasn't gotten the time and attention it deserved. Too often it was treated as a "nice-to-have" rather than a core requirement. But, things seem to be changing for the better as companies today invest more in the field. That will have a positive impact for all people.
With this increased focus on what can be a pretty complex area, how do designers, developers, product managers, and others on the product team cope?
Come listen to Ryan Swarts, a broad-based user experience professional who recently ran an accessibility program for Enterprise Holdings, discuss ways to approach it to be successful. This work can get complex very quickly, and so the goal of this talk is not to share specific technical solutions. Instead, we'll cover common things to watch out for (such as hierarchy, color, and semantic markup), ways to integrate accessibility into project plans, and tools, people, and resources to go to for help.
Hopefully after listening to the talk you will be equipped with some basic working knowledge to get started. Or if you're already moving down the path, you'll learn some new things to begin moving even further.
